Laissez Fair Bon Temps Rouler at CHPA Annual

It’s that time of year again – conference season! Our team has been traveling from coast to coast over the past few weeks meeting with clients and partners and hearing directly from industry leaders about what’s next in corporate housing. Last month, we attended one of our industry’s biggest shows of the year, CHPA Annual.

This year’s event attracted approximately 500 corporate housing professionals – nearly double last year’s attendance – to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. What were the hot topics this year? Sustainability and inventory challenges topped the list. Companies are mandating suppliers have a sustainability program in place as the price of entry to review RFPs (see Sustainability article.) And inventory challenges continue to be a problem especially in hot markets like Miami, Nashville, Phoenix and San Diego. On the good news front, the supply chain issues the industry experienced in the first half of 2022 have now leveled off and have returned to normal.

Changing Business Priorities in 2023

Companies are making little effort to track and reduce the carbon emissions within their travel programs, according to two reports published this month. A recent poll conducted by the Global Business Travel Association and campaign group Transport & Environment claims roughly one in 10 companies are taking sustainability seriously when it comes to traveling for business. The poll surveyed almost 150 travel managers based in the U.S. and just 8 percent said sustainability was a priority.

With fears of a looming recession and ongoing travel complexities, the number one priority to emerge was “cost savings and managing the traveler’s experience.”

“However, it is likely sustainability will become a larger priority as the industry (including its customers and partners) places higher priorities on sustainability and carbon reduction,” according to the report.
