Gen “Z”

Remote Work

INTRO

  • Gen Z defined:  born between 1997 and 2012; currently aged 27 to 12; theya re the children of the Millenials
  • Globally, they are known as “Digital Natives” because they are the 1st generation to grow up with access to the Internet from birth
  • Tend to spend much more time with electronic devices than books or magazines
  • Academics fear this will result in impacts to attention spans, vocabulary, and academic performance
  • I suspect some of you are seeing evidence of these concerns in the workplace
  • I’ll spend a few minutes talking about the intersection of Gen Z behaviors and the challenges and opportunities of Remote Work

HOT OFF THE PRESS – REMOTE WORK FINDINGS

  • These papers address the question of “does remote work make you more or less productive?”
  • The 1st, from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco looked across 43 industries in the private sector
  • There was NO MEANINGFUL impact on productivity
  • The 2nd, a working paper from the NY Fed, the University of Virginia, and Harvard studied just one company but found more nuanced answers
  • Before the pandemic:

o   Working closely together (at the office) resulted in more mentorship of Gen Z employees and feedback on their work products

o   Sitting near senior colleagues enabled younger staff to receive more and more timely feedback

  • During /after the pandemic:

o   Mentorship declined significantly

o   Already on board staff had a higher quit rate than new hires, researchers believe they benefited from mentorship in the pre-pandemic world and were thus able to easily land new, higher paying jobs

o   The company has adjusted, post-pandemic by changing their hiring strategy to seek more experienced people – they are now buying talent instead of building talent

TIPS FOR GETTING THINGS DONE REMOTELY

  • Ensure your team has the tools they need
  • Keep them informed and in the loop – communicate, communicate, communicate
  • Set clear expectations, guidelines, and due dates
  • Actively manage key projects and priorities
  • Be a cheerleader for your team – build remote rapport among members to defeat being isolated
  • Be sure to recognize and reward
  • Build new management capabilities to enable managers to successfully lead remote teams

Revenue growth increases 4x with a strong culture,
according to Harvard Business Review:

Don’t think your culture is important? You’re wrong,
as my friend Justin Wright lays out here…

Culture killers including
↳    toxic behavior and
↳    micromanagement
are destroying your company.

Real issues with nasty consequences.

Toxic Behavior?

Resignations will skyrocket.
Micromanagement?

Kills growth & creativity.

Luckily you can make things right…

• Appreciate team efforts.
• Encourage open dialogue.
• Promote work-life balance.
• Deal with toxic behavior asap.
• Ensure you empower your people.

Strong cultures aren’t nice-to-haves.
They are must-haves in today’s ultracompetitive world.

Take action today.
And transform your company tomorrow.

Which of these culture killers is the worst?
