This is a day that we dedicate to purifying our soul, by correcting our mistakes and reconnecting with our spiritual roots. It’s a day when we need to stop and look inward. when we need to realize that we have the ability to aspire to higher goals, rather than the petty things we make a priority in our lives that don’t really fulfill us.

So Yom Kippur is an opportunity to come out of our shell where we mainly focus on ourselves, and reconnect with others in order to attain a state of spiritual unity and harmony.

The transformation we can only experience together

This is a time of year when we’re supposed to reflect on what kind of people we really are. Do we need to upgrade the way we treat others? We probably do – so this is really about our attributes and behavior that need to be corrected.

We’re always talking about inclusion so much but the only part we really need to focus on is our emotional inclusion– meaning how good we are at connecting with others around us.

Why?

Because all our “inner work” is around this single topic: treating others the way they’d want to be treated. Yom Kippur is a perfect time to think about these things.

All our “inner work” is around this single topic: treating others the way they’d want to be treated. Yom Kippur is a perfect time to think about these things.

The restrictions on this holy day – such as not eating, drinking, showering, etc. – symbolize our selfish intentions that we can’t correct.

But the truth is that nothing that we do in our world really impacts the system except the nature of our relationships with one another. That’s why we need to focus all these things we’re doing on others – to pray for others, and to pray to fix us so that we’ll relate to others with good intentions.

So we need to look at Yom Kippur as an opportunity to fix these things in a significant way – or at least more than normal.

We all need to think about what we want to correct in our attitude. And what steps we’re willing to take to be closer to each other. We also need to focus our energy on looking out for each other and doing good, rather than mainly thinking about ourselves.
