Philip Berry highlights the significance of rebranding oneself to transition from regional success to global recognition. Philip outlines critical questions for individuals to consider, such as how to deepen their impact and export their strengths to new markets. He stresses that rebranding involves not only identifying unique competencies but also adapting to new roles and environments.
Philip highlights the four dimensions of Cultural Quotient (CQ) that are crucial for success in global interactions. He explains that CQ involves understanding one’s motivation and confidence, as well as the ability to adapt to different cultural contexts. He shares personal experiences from his work in various regions as a C-suite People leader/developer across 60 countries with Colgate-Palmolive, illustrating the necessity of adjusting mental models and behaviors to enhance cross-cultural effectiveness.
Philip shared insights on the necessity of establishing trust in cross-cultural business dealings, particularly highlighting his experiences in Turkey. He noted that while American businesspeople often prioritize efficiency, they may overlook the importance of relationship-building. By showing genuine curiosity about local customs, such as asking about prayer beads, he was able to foster trust and successfully close a deal.
Philip emphasized the significance of cultural competence in driving business success, citing his experiences with Procter & Gamble and Colgate. He noted that companies should immerse leaders in cross-cultural training and adapt products to local markets, as demonstrated by Colgate’s honey-flavored toothpaste in Russia. He outlined four key strategies for companies to excel in global markets, including international assignments and inclusive talent development.
